Are you aware there is free software available that will allow you to monitor activity on your website? It allows you to see people behavior when they visit your site. Analytic software can track activities such as:
1. Amount of visitors to your site.
2. Length of their visits.
3. How they got to your site.
4. What pages they view on your site.
This is important because it allows you to test different pages and see what is popular with your traffic. My preferred analytics program is Google Analytics. It can be easily installed on your website by your webmaster, or even yourself if you are familiar with website interface.
Well, you say, this sounds interesting, gimme more details. Okay, let me explain how it can help.
1. Referral Statistics
This tells you how you are getting your traffic. For example, say you have a banner ad on a website. You noticed you are getting a lot of traffic from that website. That tells you your banner ad is working.
Take it a step further, if you aren’t getting inquiries or calls from that traffic, you know that you need to change something on your
website. Perhaps have a stronger offer, or a better call to action. If you are putting a lot of time marketing on a particular website and the traffic you are getting from it is very little, then maybe it is time to look at other methods of marketing.
2. Organic Visitors
Organic traffic is traffic from search engines. So, by looking at this report you can tell how people are finding you. Unfortunately many times the word won’t be available due to Google not reporting it. However, if you see you continually get visitors to your site form a specific keyword, you may have an opportunity to continue marketing that particular product. If appropriate you could also target SEO campaigns with one of these keywords.
3. Bounce Rate
This shows the percentage of people that come to your site and don’t visit any other pages. An average bounce rate would be in the 40-60% range. If you are much higher than that on a consistent basis, consider revamping certain pages of your website, or perhaps the whole thing because people really aren’t interested.
Of course, if somebody is going to a specific page on your website for certain information that you provide, and then leave, that would negatively affect your bounce rate, but it could have been a good user experience. So, it’s a tricky statistic to figure out.
If you aren’t using analytics, I highly recommend getting started. Doing so, and then monitoring those reports will allow you to improve your overall user experience, and ultimately help with your conversion percentage.
